...and EXHALE...

London is probably my most favoritest city in the whole world. I just love it there. Everything about it is so compelling and fascinating. History there reaches back into a time we can barely imagine. But they dont dwell too much on the past. There are also a great many modern conveniences, symbols of a country that once ruled a large part of the known world. This week, once again, someone tried to fragment an established society. To shake it up, in the most destructive, horrific way possible. I think thats the thing that scares me the most about terrorism. It doesnt always have a specific goal. Stop doing this or well blow you up. Nope. Sometimes, they just want you to stay on the edge of your seat. To keep you alert, quivering on the edge of your last, already frayed, nerve. They just want to remind us theyre still out there, and they can still shake us up. By randomly killing people who are just going about their lives. Now, yes, Im sure arguments can be made in the other direction. But I just dont think this type of slaughter is ever ok. For anyone. For any reason. You cant just put bombs on busses and trains and kill people. An ethical society cant allow this sort of thing to happen. There have got to be people who know things. Where are they? Why dont they stand up and say something? Its all well and good to not want to turn in your friends when theyre stealing a soda from the corner store. Its another thing entirely when bombs are involved. It seems cruel to point out that it could have been worse. At this point, numbers still arent known, and it does appear to get worse every day. But the bombs could have been bigger. They could have been timed so that all of the explosives took out several trains at once. I do think it could have been worse. And thats a horrific thought.

In my own world, its been an event-filled week, in which my friend M figures prominently. M and her husband, er, M, threw a 4th of July barbecue that was delightful. On Thursday, M and I went to see Wicked at the Pantages. It was really delightful, and I was so glad that the cast turned in a great performance. Sometimes tours start to get a little tired by the West Coast, but this group was awesome, and fun to watch. We paid for orchestra seats this time, and got what we paid for. No obstructed view for us! On Saturday, M, some friends of hers, and I went to the Sing-a-long Sound of Music at the Hollywood Bowl, which is just genius. Its an arena full of people singing along to the movie, many of whom were in costume. Its the 40th anniversary of the film, so the entire cast of kids was present, as well as the current Von Trapp Family Singers. Apparently, they have a CD out. Theyre very good. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer shot a little introductory message that they played just before the movie, which made me a little sad, since they werent there in person. The only brutal part was the costume contest, which felt like it lasted for days. Fortunately, my picks won. A woman dressed up as the woman in the movie who wins third place at the Festival. You know. The woman who keeps bowing and wont get off the stage. So she did that, and it was hilarious. But the best costume by far was the guy who dressed up as the carburetor that was removed from the Nazi cars by the nuns. Go carburetor! Seriously, though, dude won like a cruise to Mexico or something. For dressing up as a carburetor. Now thats genius.

The rest of the weeks been dedicated to work, which isnt going that well, but for more reasons than I can post here. Lets just say that Im very frustrated to have been extended a couple of extra weeks. And when does that annoy people? Almost never.
